Laticrete vs. Mapei Grout Calculator Guide: Epoxy, Sanded & Square Foot Coverage

📐 Grout Coverage Quick Rules:
- Universal Formula: Coverage (lbs) =
[ (L + W) × H × Joint Width × Density ] ÷ (L × W) × Area (sq ft). - Larger tiles (e.g. 12"×24") require 70% less grout per square foot than small mosaic tiles (e.g. 2"×2").
- Epoxy grout (Laticrete SpectraLOCK) requires zero sealing and has 100% stain resistance.
- Calculate exact pounds and kits needed with our Laticrete Grout Calculator.
Tile grout coverage depends directly on three physical dimensions: tile face size, tile thickness, and joint width. Miscalculating grout leads to mismatched color dye lots if you run short mid-installation.
The Universal Tile Grout Coverage Formula
The standard Tile Council of North America (TCNA) formula for grout coverage in pounds per square foot is:
Grout (lbs/sq ft) = [ (Tile Length + Tile Width) × Tile Thickness × Joint Width × Grout Density Factor ] ÷ (Tile Length × Tile Width)
All tile dimensions are calculated in inches. The density factor for standard cementitious grout is approximately 1.75 to 1.85 g/cm³.
Laticrete SpectraLOCK vs. Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA
| Feature | Laticrete SpectraLOCK PRO | Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA |
|---|---|---|
| Grout Chemistry | High-performance Epoxy | Rapid-setting Polymer Modified Cement |
| Stain & Chemical Resistance | Maximum (Impervious, No Sealer Needed) | High (DropEffect Water-repellent) |
| Joint Width Capability | 1/16" to 1/2" (1.5mm to 12mm) | 1/16" to 3/4" (1.5mm to 19mm) |
| Pot Life / Working Time | ~45 to 60 minutes | ~20 to 30 minutes (Fast setting) |
How Grout Joint Width & Tile Size Affect Coverage
Grout volume scales linearly with joint width and inversely with tile size:
- 12" × 12" Tile with 1/8" Joint: A 25 lb bag covers approximately 130 to 150 sq ft.
- 2" × 2" Mosaic Tile with 1/8" Joint: The same 25 lb bag covers only 25 to 30 sq ft due to the high density of grout lines.
Epoxy Grout vs. Cement Grout: Weight & Density Differences
Epoxy grout kits (Part A resin, Part B hardener, Part C colored aggregate) are pre-measured by the manufacturer (Mini, Full, and Commercial units). Unlike cement grout, epoxy does not shrink as it cures, ensuring flush joints.
Waste Factor Rules for Mosaics and Irregular Tile
Always add a 10% to 15% waste allowance for standard rectangular tile, and 20% for subway or herringbone layouts to account for sponge wash-out and bucket residue. Test your project specs with our Laticrete Grout Calculator.
